Born as Peter Gene Hernandez, he’s been making a name for himself as Bruno Mars, first as a songwriter, then as an entertainer and singer himself in the early 2010s. After releasing “Just The Way You Are”, pop music would never be the same again. But what is the story behind this 5-feet powerhouse of a showman?
Once upon a time in Hawaii
Looking at Bruno’s family tree, it’s not hard to see why he ended up being a hit-making machine and selling out stadiums all around the world. His father was a percussionist and fond of Little Richard music, while his mother was a gifted singer and dancer. Further adding to his fascination with being an entertainer was his uncle. He was an Elvis impersonator and encouraged little Bruno to perform on-stage with his family, which he would continue to do all throughout his childhood.
L.A. calling
After graduating from High School, Mars decided to trade Honolulu for Los Angeles. He struggled for several years, which eventually led him to the craftsmanship of songwriting. Through a mutual friend, he met songwriter Phillip Lawrence, who liked his material but wanted one of his own artists to sing his songs. Our hero, out of money and ideas, sold his work, and realized that he might be better off behind the scenes, writing his signature Bruno Mars chords and tunes for other artists. Songs penned by Mars include Flo Rida’s “Right Round” and “Wavin’ Flag” by K’Naan, the unofficial anthem of the 2010 World Cup.
Breakthrough
Also in 2010, he co-wrote “Nothin’ On You” for rapper B.o.B, and ended up singing the chorus himself. The song shot to number one on the charts and established the name Bruno Mars as a singer in the pop world. Between the release of “Nothin’ On You” and the debut of his first album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Mars threw smash hit after smash hit at audiences, achieving commercial and critical success with “Just The Way You Are”, “Grenade” and “Lazy Song”, to name just a few.
Unstoppable entertainer
Hits like “Locked Out Of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man” preceded his highly anticipated and successful 2012 album Unorthodox Jukebox, and Bruno even got invited to perform at the Superbowl in 2014. In January 2015, Mars teamed up with Mark Ronson to produce the retro dance hit “Uptown Funk”, a three-minute disco spectacle of pure fun that became a pop culture phenomenon and won a Grammy for Record of the Year.
He kept riding the waves of success with 24K Magic, which many critics hailed as one of the best albums of the decade. It won him seven trophies at the 2018 Grammy Awards. The accompanying world tour would go on to become one of the highest-grossing tours of all time, and earned Mars praise for his outstanding showmanship and live production.
