Forming the band

What started out as a one-man project would soon become a worldwide success. Grohl recruited guitarist Pat Smear, who also used to be part of Nirvana, as well as former Sunny Day Real Estate members Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums). In 1997, Goldsmith decided to quit the band while they were recording their second album The Colour and the Shape, as Grohl had decided to re-record most of the drum parts himself, which put a strain on the band members’ relationship. Shortly afterwards, Smear left as well. The two members were replaced by Taylor Hawkins and Franz Stahl, who got fired before the Foo Fighters recorded their third album There Is Nothing Left to Lose. From 2006 on Smear occasionally appeared as a guest with the band, eventually re-joining as a full-time member in 2011. Climbing the ladder of fame

Back when Grohl was still the drummer for Nirvana, the founding father of the Foo Fighters would put chords and lyrics together to play his own songs on his guitar.
