George Michael Acordes

Born as Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou on June 25 1963, this English singer, songwriter, record producer and philanthropist rose to fame as part of the duo Wham!. Later on, Micheal focused on pursuing a solo career, breaking several records with his music. In his time he reached number one of the UK single charts seven times and on top landed eight number one songs on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Wham!

Together with Andrew Ridgeley Michael first formed the duo Wham! In 1981. Their most played chords must be those of their track “Last Christmas” — a song that still echoes over Christmas markets each year and that is a staple for about every radio channel during the festive season. “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, “Careless Whisper” and “Faith” are some of their other best-known tracks that brought the duo spectacular success.

Michael’s personal life

In 1998, after having been in several relationships with women, Micheal came out as gay. He was an active LGBT rights campaigner and participated in many HIV/AIDS charity fundraisers. In his professional career, Micheal was shining ever so brightly, however, he was struggling in his private life. He was arrested for drug-related offenses in 2006, 2008 and 2010 and admitted on a radio show that he was struggling with substance abuse, which included cannabis and sleeping pills. In 2011 he got hospitalized after complaining about chest pain and as a result of a viral infection, his tours got cancelled. He got diagnosed with pneumonia and after his condition worsened severely, he was in an intensive care unit, being in a comatose state. Yet, as he got nursed back to health, he eventually got released from the hospital. In December 2016, at the age of 53, Micheal passed away, as a result of heart and liver disease.
