Joining his four brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon, they formed The Jackson 5, led by their father Joe. The group toured clubs and bars performing soul, and rhythm and blues, popular musical genres during those days. Soon they were being noticed by record labels and in 1968 they were signed by the famous Motown Records. The Jackson brothers were to celebrate great successes, producing multiple chart-topping songs like “I Want You Back” and “ABC”. Yet, Michael’s insurmountable musical talent meant a successful solo career seemed inevitable.

The “King of Pop”

Michael Jackson released his first of four solo albums with Motown in 1972, but it would be his fifth album Off The Wall, released in 1979 by Epic Records, which really set off his rise to infinite stardom. Featuring the number-one singles “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough” and “Rock With You”, the album showcases Michael’s proficiency across a variety of musical genres. Disco, rock and funk appear in addition to the main thrust of soul, and rhythm and blues. Funky and upbeat chords alternating with soulful chords, Michael Jackson set the standard for pop music for decades to come. His next album Thriller, released in 1982, would prove to be the most acclaimed and successful of his oeuvre. The album includes a total of seven top 10 singles, “Billie Jean” and “Beat It” being among them. Also, Thriller became the best-selling album of all time worldwide, besides winning eight Grammy Awards, including for Album of the Year. Michael Jackson subsequently continued to dominate pop music, eventually earning him the title the “King of Pop.”

Controversy

The eccentric artist Michael Jackson has been at the center of many controversies. At first revolving around his child-like behavior and changing appearance, the scandals became more damning when being accused of child abuse. This culminated in the 2019 documentary “Leaving Neverland,” convincing many Michael did commit the crime. He was no longer able to defend himself though, having died an early death in 2009, aged 50. Yet, despite the tragedy surrounding his life and actions, the powerful songs and chords Michael Jackson produced will continue to inspire musicians for some time to come.
